Overview

Crux Catalog is a searchable catalog of over 20,000 prebuilt, model-ready dataset integrations. It allows you to browse, search, sort, and filter a complete inventory of data products and suppliers supported by Crux.

Why Do You Need the Crux Catalog?

Using the Crux Catalog helps organizations streamline the discoverability of external data. It helps discover, understand, and onboard external data faster, leading to quicker onboarding and growth of your external data ecosystem.

Getting Started

To get started with the Crux Catalog, click on the 📑 Catalog icon in the main menu.

Crux Catalog Functions

Crux Catalog provides five main functions:

  1. Browse available data product collections, data products, data suppliers, and their metadata

  2. Search Crux inventory for data products and suppliers of interest

  3. Filter data products to refine the available selection with a variety of metadata to meet your needs

  4. Examine the data product and drill down into its datasets, tables, table schemas, and sample data

  5. Request access to a data product or get help with supplier license management by contacting the Crux team.

Browsing the Crux Catalog

This feature allows you to inspect data products, datasets, tables, table schema, samples, and associated metadata. You can view the schema and samples of any public data product or those for which you have an active subscription. The data product tile instantly indicates if you are entitled to the data product or if it requires access.

You can browse the Crux Catalog by exploring available Data Products or Suppliers. The top navigation menu quickly helps you switch between the two browsing methods.

Browsing Data Products

When you visit the Crux Catalog, you can easily browse and explore more than 20,000 data products that Crux is currently operating or has onboarded in the past.

Each data product tile indicates its name, supplier, brief description, and metadata—market Vertical, Category, Asset Class, Region, etc. If your organization already subscribes to this Data Product, a green check will appear in the top right corner of the tile. Otherwise, a 🔒 lock icon will appear, indicating that a subscription is required to view data product details such as schema or sample data.

On the data products page, click the "Browse Suppliers" button to browse the Crux Catalog by supplier, or click on the data product tile to explore the details of the data products.

Understanding Data Product Details

The Crux domain model organizes data using a Data Product > Dataset(s) > Table(s) > Table Schema(s) structure. The Crux Catalog helps you deeply explore each data product to understand its details.

Data Product Details

Each data product page contains the following information:

  • Data product name

  • Data product description

  • Supplier name

  • Metadata -- access type (commercial or public), market vertical, category, asset class, region, and country

  • Dataset(s)

Click on the Supplier name to learn more about the data provided and other data products the supplier publishes.

Dataset Details

You can then examine the details of each dataset in the data product, including:

  • Dataset name

  • Configured schedule

  • Table(s)

The configured schedule specifies when Crux ingests data from the supplier's sources. Crux uses this information to schedule dataset workflows to keep data up-to-date.

Table Details

Table details include:

  • Table name

  • Table description

  • Table schema(s)

  • Sample (optional)

Schema Details

A table may contain more than one schema if the able's structure evolved over time.

Sample Details

If the table has a sample, you can download it.

You can view table schema and sample details only if the data product is public or you are a subscriber. If not, you can request access, and one of Crux's representatives can help you obtain a subscription to this data product by introducing you to the data supplier.

Browsing Suppliers

Each supplier details page contains the following information:

  • Supplier name

  • Supplier description

  • Website URL

  • Data products that the supplier publishes

Click on the "Get in Touch" button to request an introduction to the supplier. Crux's Supplier Operations team can help accelerate and simplify license management by helping coordinate your engagement with the supplier.

Click on the data product tile to learn more about the details of each data product.

While on the data supplier's page, click "Browse Data Products" to return to explore groupings of data products by browsing Data Products.

Searching the Crux Catalog

You can search the Crux Catalog by typing a keyword that identifies matching data products and suppliers. You can also incorporate filters to find Crux Catalog inventory based on various metadata criteria.

Filtering the Crux Catalog

You can filter data products using a variety of metadata.

When browsing data products, in addition to filtering by metadata, you can toggle the "Show my subscriptions only" to display only the data products your organization subscribes to.

Understanding Crux Catalog Metadata

Crux Catalog metadata provides additional additional information about data products. The metadata field allows you to classify and search data to locate assets you need quickly. Crux provides the following metadata to describe data products:

  • Access Type -- indicates if the data product is public or commercial

  • Supplier -- indicates the name of the vendor that publishes the data

  • Market Vertical -- indicates if the data product belongs to the Altermive or Financial sector

  • Category -- indicates the name of the category that best describes the data delivered with the data product

  • Asset Class --

  • Region -- indicates the geopolitical region the data applies to

  • Country -- if the Region is set, indicates the applicable country name

FAQs

I cannot find the data product I am looking for. What are my options?

Click on the "Contact Crux" button on the Crux Catalog home page, and one of Crux's representatives will contact you to help locate what you are looking for. We may already have the data product in our inventory if we have previously onboarded it, or help engage with the supplier to help accelerate its onboarding.

Known Issues

Some data tables may not have schema details. An example is here. Unfortunately, we cannot know if the table has schema(s) details until the user clicks on the "Schema" element to examine its details. In the short term, the application will display “No schema detected.” We plan to improve this experience in the future.

What's Next

Crux will support Crux Catalog APIs in future releases to help you manage your own or third-party data catalogs. The Crux Catalog APIs will provide a programmatic read-only service to discover and manage your external data with data products, suppliers, and metadata from the Crux Catalog.
